Save the Scene.

This week my friends and I have pondered many ideas on how to save this areas scene. Obviously from the past boring posts nothing good has happened in a while. With some ideas we have were hoping this will change.

A good friend of mine, Zane Riley, now owns the domain semopunk.com. With this website we are hoping to link everyone in this area and keep everyone updated on the shows and everything going on. Bands will be able to be reached from this site and local news will be posted on it as well. If we can get kids to visit this website frequently and pay attention to whats going on there may be some hope for the music scene around here.

As soon as the site becomes available the link will be posted.

Weekly Blog 11/22-28

I really feel that the music scene has been completely washed down the drain. Nothing new has happened in the past few weeks to bring it back to life. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything different since the biggest venue in the area closed its doors. From what I understood the plan to keep it going was to have shows in random places throughout the bootheel. Rather it was the Osage Center in Cape or a small bar in Poplar Bluff, but that idea seems to be dead as well. Hopefully over time something great will happen to bring it back to life.

The Manhattan Room was rocking again.

In Sikeston there’s a small basement in a downtown building that is usually used for weddings. When I was younger there were shows there quite often and for the past three years there hasn’t been a single one. Saturday night it was opened up again for a concert. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to go because of work but I’m sure if it was anything like the old shows there, it was excellent.

Monday:

Throughout the class period Monday I mainly focused on my sources. I looked at all the sources in my annotated bibliography from essay 3 and did more evaluating on them to see if they were worth trying to use in essay 4. I also dug a little deeper to see if there were anymore sources that I could find that would be useful.

Wednesday:

I used Tuesday as a day to construct an outline and see exactly how I wanted essay 4 to be. I thought about my thesis more and then went through my sources and thought about good arguments for and against my thesis.

Friday:

My main objective for the library time today was to focus just on writing my rough draft. So far so good.

This weeks post is going to be a little different. I’m going to focus on a single band that has been one of my favorites since I first got into music. Horizontal Orange, now Here I Am Send Me but for this blog I’m going to refer to them by their old name.

Horizontal Orange stepped into the music scene about the same time I did. I remember these guys as being the best band in the area and wherever they played that weekend was the place to be. They played amazing southern metal music, had an awesome light show, a crazy stage presence, and were probably the coolest dudes to hang out with. Whenever my band was still playing shows they were more than happy to help and always wanted us to play shows with them.

About a year ago these guys called it quits and stepped out of the music scene. Prior to the end of Horizontal Orange they had lost all but three of their members and had to pick up other members which I’m assuming didn’t work out. The announcement of their last show was a really sad time.

Now they’re back as Here I Am Send Me. I have yet to see these guys live but if they are anything like Horizontal Orange was it’ll be amazing. From the music on their myspace and the about me section it’s obvious that they’ve matured greatly and they also consider themselves a Christian band now.

A recent blog was posted on The Well’s myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thewellconcerts) that gave some information to its closing. Apparently, coming from the blog, The Well did not have the correct permits to hold concerts and after almost 4 years of doing it they are being shut down. Hopefully a miracle will happen and the venue will be allowed to stay open, but as for now every show is cancelled.

In other news, well there really isn’t any. I suppose shows will still take place in Cape and other random places throughout the area.

Friday night after class my friends and I loaded up and headed to Poplar Bluff to see probably one of the last few shows we will see at The Well. Molotov Solution, American Me, and Upon a Burning Body were the bands on the list to play and all have been some favorites of mine for some time. When we got to The Well there was not a crowd at all, possibly only 30 to 40 people, and we were informed that American Me had dropped the bill because they had gotten snowed in. I was pretty disappointed but figured the other two bands would make up for them not being there.

Two local bands started off the show. The first band’s set was cut short because of technical difficulties and I stepped outside for the second one because of lack of interest. Upon a Burning Body (http://www.myspace.com/uponaburningbody) was next and they definitely put on an excellent show. They brought some killer breakdowns and fast paced riffs with wicked blastbeats. I was impressed by their performance and would for sure see them again.

The fourth, and last band (really short show), was Molotov Solution (http://www.myspace.com/molotovsolution). These guys were very professional, they had top notch gear and electronic effects to make the most of their songs. They had an excellent set and even did an encore song, which was my favorite by them. I was very impressed and hope they come back again.

It’s such a “hit and miss” with good shows around here. There are some days where The Well can’t fit everybody in the building and some days where the crowd is maybe 20 to 40 people. I guess that’s why The Well is having to shut down and the end of this areas music scene is coming closer.

This past week has been excellent. Three, yes three, shows took place and I had the privilege of going to two of them.

The first was Wednesday at The Well. I didn’t get out of class till almost five which made it impossible to get there on time. My friends and I arrived while the last local band was finishing up (perfect timing if I had to say so myself) and the next band was Mychildren Mybride (http://www.myspace.com/mcmb). They had an excellent set starting out with On Wings of Integrity (probably my favorite) and then ending with Headshot (a song about Halo.) Impending Doom was the last band to play and I got bored with the after the first song so I stepped outside and hung out with the people that felt the same, there were many.

The second show of the week was Friday night at the 4H in Cape. Once again I was fashionable late, actually very late, conveniently missing the locals again and got there in time for the headlining band, War of Ages, to play. The crowd was very different compared to The Well which really destroyed the way I felt about the show. There were a lot of younger kids there that were just looking for trouble. I watched War of Ages play, almost bored myself to death, and then left.

The last show for the week was another at The Well on Saturday. A famous band around this area, In the Midst of Lions, from St. Louis came down to play. I’m sure the show went well because they have a big fan base here and usually kids flock to wherever they’re playing.

The Well’s End

I guess all good things come to an end sometime. The Well has announced its last show ever. November 28 is, as of now, the official last show that will ever be held there. It’s definitely extremely sad news for this area. The Well brought so many people together and I probably wouldn’t know half the people I do if it wasn’t for that place. Hopefully a miracle will happen and The Well will reopen under new, better management.

The Well’s past:

In the meantime the 4-H building in Cape Girardeau is stepping up and announcing shows left and right. So far it’s looking like the next few months will consist of numerous shows by huge bands. The first one being October 23 featuring War of Ages.
